museum of natural history

so we had a really productive day and went from the st. patty's parade to the empire state (which if you're reading this the first time, are entries below) to the natural history museum.

oceanography room

that's a life sized blue whale

evolution of fish

evolution of everything

nothing like a few dinosaur bones to stir some childhood memories

if you dont think these are just plain cool, you need to go read some calvin and hobbes or something.

bugs

these are live btw, they just sorta chill and let you take pictures.

9 1/2 inches across makes this the eagle of winged arthopods

monarch

the planetarium from outside which we didnt get to see. guess ill have to go back

the empire state revisited

was kind of a hazy day so there are more simcity-esque pictures than skylines.

note flag, it's still st. patty's

in uptown direction. thats central park there in the middle. where central park ends in the upper left (northeast) corner is columbia. (you really cant make it out though)

ode to maxis

i swear they modeled buildings off pictures like these

chrysler by day

broadway and sixth, right by an enormous macy's

st. patty's

st. patty's cathedral: the "mecca" of irishness in a still irish town

repeat image 250 times for full parade effect

nypd

for new yorkers, by new yorkers

from the empire state onto fifth avenue. if you zoom in you can see the parade which runs about 40 blocks up fifth.

the MoMA

my sister took a bunch of terrific pictures at the MoMA, though somehow me mananged to not really take any pictures of the MoMA itself at all =/. its an incredible museum and the mountain of experience Taniguchi, the architect, brings to museum design and especially its interior spaces is acutely noticeable. this, of course, says nothing of its truely fantastic collection with which really only D'Orsay in Paris can compete. im a fan...

sabine took this incredible picture through the tinted windows of the MoMA

adjoining plaza

you can really look into the apartments of the peope living across the street.

we ate at sushi kato (orange overhang) after the museum. might have been the best sushie ive eaten.

sculpture garden

though its hard to tell from this picture, this building is free standing. it must have thoroughly peeved the designers to have to have to build around this irish pub.
